Chapter 41: Madhouse (8)
Knowing the staff cafeteria was a breakthrough was indeed an exciting piece of good news. But how to even get to the cafeteria was the real problem.
Ji Ning calmed herself and looked around.
During the day, the Madhouse was not only heavily guarded and patrolled, but there was also almost no cover, with empty, open spaces everywhere.
They could only act safely under the cover of dead of night when no one was around.
Then came the next problem: once locked in the dormitory, escape was impossible. To create the conditions for nighttime movement, she had to evade control before being taken back to the dormitory.
Such an opportunity only existed during the patient reception period.
Ji Ning could only quietly wait for Jiang Ting's next visit to make further plans.
The customers returned to the Madhouse at 1 PM the next day. At this point, only 33 hours remained before the mission deadline—just one day and two nights. Time was truly running out for the players.
The remaining four male players and four female players paired up again. After the selections were made, the female players were sent to the guest prep area to be showered and dressed up just like the first time.
The shower pool looked like a converted swimming pool and was by no means small. Ji Ning and the others stood in the water as an NPC hosed them down like washing livestock.
"I've spotted the rope. I'll steal it later. Cover me."
A faint whisper drifted to her ear. Ji Ning recognized He Huihui's voice. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Player No. 12 respond with a sound of acknowledgment.
He Huihui and No. 12 had been wolf teammates who both drew the Werewolf role in the previous Werewolf game. It seemed that because they hadn't obtained a hint, they had chosen the seemingly more convenient wall-climbing method for their escape.
Ji Ning had some minor friction with He Huihui in the previous instance, but seeing two living, breathing people about to walk down a path to certain death, Ji Ning still couldn't bear it.
But then she remembered what Xing Ye had told her: if all players chose the same answer, everyone would die. Ji Ning didn't know if choosing the same escape method in this instance counted as violating that unwritten rule. She sank into hesitation.
At that moment, perhaps realizing she had spoken a bit too loudly, He Huihui warily eyed Ji Ning, who was very close to her.
Noticing Ji Ning's odd expression, He Huihui kept her lips still and gritted out viciously, "If you dare sell us out, you're dead!"
To reinforce the threat, she even pinched Ji Ning's leg underwater.
What little sympathy Ji Ning had was pinched clean away by He Huihui. She ignored her, lest the NPCs notice something amiss and get them all killed.
After this little episode, Ji Ning's mood was somewhat mixed, and she didn't play her crazed lunatic act quite as foolishly as the first time.
After the female worker left the room, Ji Ning, still under the influence of "drugs," proactively clung to Jiang Ting.
Jiang Ting held her, smelling her neck with an ambiguous touch, and asked, "What's wrong with you?"
Ji Ning didn't immediately register what he was asking and instinctively responded with a blank: "Huh?"
Jiang Ting's lips brushed lightly against Ji Ning's neck. He found the smoothness unbelievably silky.
He had seen Ji Ning's smile before and tried to use his customary coldness to resist the inner panic it caused. But today she wasn't smiling anymore, and he felt a strange emptiness.
He wanted to show concern for her, but the words reached his lips and came out as a few stark syllables: "Not happy?"
"No." Perhaps it was Jiang Ting's overly icy aura, but Ji Ning instinctively sealed away her true feelings. Realizing her denial was too abrupt and not wanting Jiang Ting to mistake it for dislike, she added, "Just worried about the mission."
Jiang Ting nodded slightly. The system announcement from the day before yesterday would indeed make anyone more anxious about the mission.
He wanted to embrace Ji Ning, to comfort her a little. His hand, reaching for her back, paused for a moment, then finally settled, patting it with unpracticed awkwardness.
His touch was very light and made Ji Ning ticklish.
Assuming Jiang Ting was trying to flirt, she placed both hands on his chest and pulled his shirt open.
Though Jiang Ting's personality wasn't particularly endearing, his physique and cock were top-notch. Seeing the solid pectoral muscles concealed beneath his clothes, Ji Ning gradually forgot her troubles.
