Chapter 119: Silent Land of the Living Dead (8)
In the residential building, closed doors could not be opened, and some of the open-door apartments revealed horrifically bloody scenes. The four-person squad fought as they walked, searching for a long time before finding an apartment that was messy but not gory.
After a thorough sweep confirmed there was no danger, they closed the door and finally breathed a sigh of relief.
By then, it was completely dark outside. Faint, agonized screams could be heard from the darkness, making it clear that in this instance, the danger level during the day and at night were worlds apart.
Song Weiyang emerged from the bathroom and said with a light chuckle, "Good, good. No electricity, but there's water. This place has a solar heater, so the water's still hot. Captain, you should wash up first, baby."
"Alright," Ji Ning agreed, going into a bedroom to find a change of clothes.
She hadn't noticed it while they were on the move, but now that things were quiet, she could smell the mixture of sweat and blood on her body, a scent difficult to describe.
With Xing Ye's help, she removed her protective gear, lit a candle, and explored the apartment a bit.
Judging by the decor and layout, this home belonged to a fairly well-off family. If you overlooked the chaos caused by the apocalypse, the place was actually kept very neat and clean.
The apartment had three bedrooms, two living rooms, and two bathrooms. The style of the second bedroom clearly belonged to a boy and a girl, which meant all four of them could find suitable clothes.
Ji Ning first took a nightgown and a new pair of underwear for the evening, then grabbed a long-sleeved shirt and a pair of long sweatpants for the next day before heading into the bathroom.
She fixed the candle on the sink counter and, by its faint light, meticulously washed her body and hair.
For the first time since entering this survival instance, she felt truly relaxed.
After drying her hair, she found a new toothbrush in a drawer, brushed her teeth, and set out three new toothbrushes to the side. Wearing her nightgown, Ji Ning walked into the living room.
Two candles flickered on the coffee table. The three men were sitting on the sofa, discussing their current situation.
She caught the tail end of a sentence: "…I wonder if tomorrow, the Living Dead will revert to their daytime state, or if they'll just keep getting more monstrous as time goes on."
"In that case, we need to eat well, sleep early, and conserve our energy so we can fight in better shape tomorrow! So, who's showering next?" Ji Ning walked up to them, noticing the scent coming off the men was much stronger and more pungent.
The three men exchanged glances, their intentions clear: they all wanted to wash up as soon as possible.
"Then! Let's settle this the manly way!" Song Weiyang rolled up his sleeves.
Ji Ning paused. "What's the manly way?"
Song Weiyang raised a hand behind his head. "Rock, paper, scissors!"
As he raised his hand, Xing Ye and Sheng Churan caught on instantly and raised their hands simultaneously.
Song Weiyang not only wanted to decide the winner this way but also had some slick tricks in mind. He asked, "I'm throwing paper. What are you guys throwing?"
Xing Ye answered crisply, "I'm throwing paper, too."
Sheng Churan thought for a moment and said casually, "I'm throwing scissors."
The game was getting interesting. Ji Ning stood to the side, secretly laughing, curious to see who would win the first shower.
"Rock, paper—scissors!" Song Weiyang called the rhythm.
Three hands shot out. Song Weiyang, who claimed he'd throw paper, threw scissors. Sheng Churan, who said scissors, stayed with scissors. And Xing Ye, who declared paper, threw rock.
In the first round, Xing Ye, a master of deception in warfare, won the first shower privilege. Song Weiyang and Sheng Churan sighed in unison.
Xing Ye, a slight smile curling his lips, took the clothes he'd picked out and went into the bathroom.
Ji Ning was dying of laughter. She knew exactly how that had played out.
Song Weiyang had said paper. The counter to paper was scissors. Worried that Xing Ye and Sheng Churan might think he would switch to rock and stay with paper, he changed to scissors instead.
Sheng Churan had intended to counter all fancy tricks with a steady play, sticking to scissors.
And Xing Ye had likely aimed for a three-way tie with one scissors, one paper, one rock, and changed to rock. Rock also defended against Song Weiyang switching his throw, allowing him to counter both opponents and seize the round.
Then, in a one-on-one match, Song Weiyang lost to Sheng Churan and became the last to shower. He leaned back on the sofa and sighed heavily.
Laughing, Ji Ning walked into the daughter's bedroom and lay down on the bed to rest.
Perhaps she was utterly exhausted from rushing around all day, because she lost consciousness almost immediately.
