Chapter 181: To My Readers
This is a response to my dear treasure "Little Mao Mao" and a few other enthusiastic commenters, explaining this novel's origins, intent, style, and structure.
Honestly, this novel isn't that refined or profound.
I previously thought that writing on PO, the plot was always in service of the smut, so the current content has skirted around some of the more complex world-building explanations.
And personally, both as a reader and a writer, I like things light, pleasant, and easy to digest, so for my first novel, I didn't make it too complicated.
Although this setting is relatively dark, I buried all that dark stuff deep underground and didn't let it sprout.
Because the setting involves fantastical content, like the game world, the system, and forces behind the scenes, a lot of details shouldn't be viewed through the lens of real-world logic.
The setup for the entire story runs through the whole book, and some parts won't even unfold until after the female lead has cleared all 30 worlds.
In the last chapter, I wrote about the female lead's attitude toward the game world, which had been foreshadowed earlier.
One of her strengths is "adaptation".
Perhaps for us normal viewers, this mindset is hard to understand; you might think, why doesn't she resist? Why doesn't she rebel?
Let me explain: I feel that the environment the female lead and the male leads are in is a fantastical world that ordinary mortals are powerless to resist. They don't even know who the "enemy" is.
Except for their own minds, everything else is passive.
Just like living in this world of ours, other than changing ourselves, we can't change anything (the larger environment).
So, the core of this story should be "survival of the fittest".
The leads will, under the premise of adapting to the survival game, do their utmost to fight for the top-tier rewards and status, until they possess the power to control the situation.
Regarding the romance arc:
The pacing of this novel's romance is written very quickly. Just as my treasure Little Mao Mao said, under the "bridge effect" of the game world, there are far too many opportunities, or even "illusions", that can cause someone to fall in love with another person.
And then, because in this collapsing game world, perhaps "love" is an amplified redemption, the only thing that's "clean".
So, a tragic emotional trajectory is unlikely to appear. (Just exaggerating, it's really just because I only know how to write sweet fluff.)
Also, between the male leads, I haven't written any bloody, life-or-death competition, or any of them scheming to frame another just to fight over the female lead.
This is because I'm not too fond of one-dimensionally love-brained male characters who have no heart or morals outside of love.
In the earlier text, I explained this through Xing Ye's psychological description.
Because one man can't always protect the female lead. Having many friends paves many paths. If he truly loves her, I think any smart person wouldn't choose to monopolize her.
Although he wants to possess her exclusively, for her sake, to keep her alive, he restrains his possessiveness and acts a bit more magnanimously, cheerfully wearing a green hat and shaking hands with his love rivals on the surface (while secretly competing for favor)—isn't that even tastier?
Writing this at the end, I want to once again confess my love to all my readers, to the angels who give me their piggy banks and leave comments in the comment section.
