A Pure White Maiden who checks a Lesser Wolf on Night One can reveal herself to push out the Lesser Wolf and hunt for the Wolf Witch. Or she can stay hidden, let her check kill the Lesser Wolf on the second night, and keep hunting for the Wolf Witch.
But a Pure White Maiden who checks the Wolf Witch on Night One gains an enormous advantage by revealing herself. She can get the Wolf Witch eliminated during the day. Once the Wolf Witch is dead, no one can counter the Pure White Maiden, and the Guard can protect her from the wolf kill, guaranteeing she survives to check on the third night too.
That's only an ideal scenario, though, because the Wolf Team will self-destruct to protect their Alpha Wolf. Still, in that case the Pure White Maiden essentially trades for two wolves, which is no loss at all.
So the playability of Shen Yu claiming Pure White Maiden and handing Ji Ning a Wolf Witch Wolf Check was extremely high. From the perspective of a Vanilla Villager, its credibility was very high too.
Then could he be the Wolf Witch who had checked Ji Ning as the Pure White Maiden?
Ji Ning thought not necessarily.
Because just as the Pure White Maiden fears being found by the Wolf Witch, the Wolf Witch equally fears being found by the Pure White Maiden.
If Ji Ning's defense was good enough to be accepted by the Town and kept alive into the night, she would originally have no lead on the Wolf Witch. But once the Wolf Witch made a play, it would turn into a targeted bombing.

Because she had only checked Gold Water. If she got bluffed out, or got voted out, the Town Faction would suffer a catastrophic collapse.
She had to guarantee she wouldn't eat a big vote, while ideally keeping her identity hidden. What she was gambling on was that the Wolf Witch hadn't checked her as the Pure White Maiden.
If the Wolf Witch had already checked her, then Ji Ning would just have to take Shen Yu with her on the second night—assuming he was still alive by then.
Much as Ji Ning expected, most of the players who spoke before her on the Sheriff ballot believed Shen Yu was the Pure White Maiden, or a Gun Role bluffing for identity. They thought the Wolf Team wouldn't jump out to find a check like this.
Finally, it was Ji Ning's turn to speak.
Under the curious and probing stares of eleven pairs of eyes, she laid out the defense she had been formulating for several minutes, speaking calmly and deliberately: "I am not the Wolf Witch. If I were the Wolf Witch, what are my wolf teammates doing? Still not self-destructing, waiting until after I'm voted out to self-destruct? No one has self-destructed yet because I have no teammates.
