Chapter 92
When Qiu Chi returned to the town nearest the Demon Sect, she heard a few small things.
The townspeople all knew that they called themselves the Demon Sect, but they weren't particularly afraid.
After all, aside from the dozen or so burly men who didn't look pitiful, the other people Qiu Chi had picked up were always seen by someone when she brought them back.
Hearing them call themselves the Demon Sect, some of the people hired to help with the work had tried to persuade them: "The Demon Sect is so cruel. Why would you use a name like that? It's such bad luck. If the real Demon Sect hears about it, you'll be in big trouble."
The burly man who answered him thought the same. With a mournful expression, he said, "You're right, I said the same thing. But our Sect Leader insisted on this name. I just figured that in a small place like ours, word probably wouldn't reach the real Demon Sect's ears."
"Sigh, your Sect Leader is quite kind, saving so many people. She's just a bit of a character."
The burly man sighed along with him.
In any case, they were now getting along quite harmoniously with the townspeople at the foot of the mountain.
And when Qiu Chi returned, many of the townspeople greeted her upon seeing her.
After responding to them, Qiu Chi ordered a few dishes at an eatery. As she ate, she detected several furtive individuals with her spiritual sense.
Qiu Chi continued eating, her expression unchanged, but kept a sliver of her awareness focused on them.
"Someone here actually dares to impersonate us! This is outrageous! We should go back and tell the Sect Leader right now and have them annihilated!"
The person who had spoken with righteous indignation was immediately kicked. "Annihilate my ass! We haven't even figured out their background. What if they're stronger than us? Who'll be annihilating whom then?"
The one who was kicked felt wronged. "But we can't just stand by and watch them impersonate us, can we? Look at our reputation in the martial world—every piece of trash and rotten deed gets blamed on us."
"That's why we have to properly develop the Demon Sect, expand our sect, clear our tarnished name, and rip the fig leaves off those sanctimonious hypocrites!"
"So, what do we do about these impersonators?"
"Since they call themselves the Demon Sect, they must admire us. In that case, we should absorb them into our sect. This is a great opportunity to expand our influence."
Qiu Chi: "..." Ugly people sure have beautiful dreams.
After finishing her meal and paying, Qiu Chi went to find them.
They were squatting by a stream not far from town, gnawing on dry rations. Their clothes were washed until they were faded, and many spots were covered with patches.
If not for their conversation, who would have guessed that these were the members of the Demon Sect, a group infamous throughout the martial world for their countless evils?
As Qiu Chi approached, she heard them talking. "I don't want to eat dry rations anymore. Let's go hunt a rabbit."
"Let's just stick to the rations. We have business to attend to later. Besides, one rabbit isn't nearly enough. I could eat one all by myself."
These words successfully made the person who had suggested hunting a rabbit gulp.
Qiu Chi couldn't listen any longer. She stepped forward and said, "I'd like to ask you something. You're from the Demon Sect, right? Where is your sect located?"
The men gnawing on rations exchanged glances, sizing up Qiu Chi's slender frame in disbelief. "Why are you asking about the Demon Sect? Don't tell me you want to join, too?"
They were wary at first, but then they remembered there was another "Demon Sect" on this mountain and figured Qiu Chi was probably looking for that one.
It wasn't that they discriminated against women—after all, their own sect had female members. But looking at Qiu Chi's delicate skin, it was obvious she had been pampered. She looked like she couldn't carry a heavy load or lift a thing. They truly couldn't imagine what she would do in the Demon Sect.
The Demon Sect on this mountain even accepted a young lady like this? Could it be they just thought the name "Demon Sect" sounded powerful and impressive?
In a single instant, their minds had already concocted a whole backstory.
But then they saw Qiu Chi shake her head with a smile. "No, I am the Sect Leader of the Demon Sect. I heard you discussing the sect, so I thought I'd come over and ask if you'd like to join us."
Before they could recover from their shock, Qiu Chi's tone shifted, becoming exceptionally disdainful. "Look at what you're wearing, and then look at what you're eating. It's all a bit too shabby. Join our Demon Sect, and you can wear new clothes, drink wine, eat meat, and live in new houses. Why don't you go back and tell your Sect Leader to consider my offer?"
