Chapter 116: Silent Land of the Living Dead (5)
"It really is worse over here…" Ji Ning poked her head out from the window. A single glance showed that because so many living people had just died on this diagonal street, the Living Dead were now eating human flesh in piles. Like hyenas on the savanna.
Ten minutes ago, the four of them had geared up and set out from the hotel, hacking their way across the road and clearing out a coffee shop to use as a waypoint. They were heading to a hardware store to scavenge for weapons.
But according to the navigation, there was a large supermarket at the end of the diagonal street on their necessary route, a place with far higher foot traffic than here, making it a high-risk zone for Living Dead activity.
Ji Ning and the others needed to reach the middle section of that street, then turn into an alley from a side road to find the hardware store.
The mission was truly daunting.
Ji Ning turned her head and saw Xing Ye carrying a pile of books from the coffee shop bookshelf, along with a few rolls of tape. She asked, "What are you doing with those?"
Xing Ye tore off a piece of tape, took Ji Ning's hand and pulled it up, wrapping a book around her arm. As he wound the tape, he said, "Making you book armor so you don't get bitten. Let's wrap your arms and legs; your clothes offer no protection."
Ji Ning nodded in sudden realization. "Good idea!"
Then, Sheng Churan came over holding two small bread-cutting boards, standing behind Xing Ye as if waiting in line.
Ji Ning's gaze shifted from Xing Ye's meticulous, downcast expression to Sheng Churan. She blinked. "And these?"
"Tie them to your body. It's safer," Sheng Churan explained.
Ji Ning smiled, feeling like a fragile protected animal. "But won't too many layers restrict my movement?"
Xing Ye glanced back, not dismissing Sheng Churan's items. "No, it'll be fine. I'll tie them for you. If I could, I'd armor you down to your teeth."
Sheng Churan: …He was the one who found the boards. Logically, he should be the one tying them on Ji Ning…
Just as Sheng Churan was grumbling internally, Xing Ye finished wrapping both of Ji Ning's arms and extended a hand toward him, signaling for him to hand over the boards.
"Let me do it. You rest for a bit," Sheng Churan said tactfully.
Xing Ye didn't budge an inch. "It's fine, I'm not tired."
Ji Ning looked at one, then the other. "You two…"
Xing Ye and Sheng Churan looked at her simultaneously, their eyes both clearly saying—you choose.
Being stared at by two handsome men with such expectant gazes at the same time was truly oppressive.
Ji Ning held her breath before hesitating, "How about… you both do it together? There are exactly two boards…"
Sheng Churan walked up to Ji Ning, held one board against her abdomen to measure, and handed the other to Xing Ye.
Ji Ning had no choice but to face Sheng Churan, leaving her back to Xing Ye.
She never expected that simply wrapping boards would become such an ordeal.
Two pairs of hands slowly roamed and explored her body from front and back. Even wrapping the tape required measuring with their fingers, pressing gently against her waist and back.
Ji Ning was so ticklish she kept twisting her body, only to be straightened again by them under the pretext of taping, then touched some more.
When the boards were finally secured, Ji Ning felt like the two of them had made her break out in a sweat.
"What are you guys doing?" Song Weiyang walked out from inside, his arms full of items. "Look at the great stuff I found."
Ji Ning felt as if she'd been granted amnesty. She quickly slipped over to Song Weiyang, tugging at his arm to see what he was holding.
"Walkie-talkies! And… what's this, a megaphone?" Ji Ning took it in her hands to examine.
Song Weiyang explained, "Yes, the loudspeaker waiters use to call orders. And these walkie-talkies, I got four, one for each of us. If we get separated, we can still stay in contact."
"You're practically a gold miner! Digging up such useful things!" Ji Ning was genuinely surprised and delighted. She shared a smile with Song Weiyang, stood on her tiptoes, and kissed his cheek.
Xing Ye and Sheng Churan also gathered around, each taking a walkie-talkie and praising Song Weiyang for his good find.
Ji Ning poked the megaphone Song Weiyang was holding again. "So what's this for?"
Song Weiyang's smile faded slightly. He looked at her seriously. "I'll use this to lure the zombies away, then you guys can charge through."
"No!" Ji Ning immediately frowned and refused. "That's too dangerous. How can we let you be the bait?"
Hearing Song Weiyang's plan, Xing Ye patted his shoulder. "The risk is too high. We can think of another way."
"This has a recording function. I saw two big vehicles crashed and stopped over there. I'll lure them together, go in from one side, leave this behind, and then circle back from the other side." Song Weiyang raised an eyebrow at Ji Ning and smiled, speaking with a showy lightness. "It's fine, I'm fast! Double first place in the sports academy's 100-meter and 5000-meter runs, no joke! I'm super strong, don't worry, Captain, baby."
Song Weiyang's brow carried the high spirits of youth, his eyes shining with vigor, as relaxed as if he were about to go participate in a sports meet.
Yet deep down, he knew very well this wasn't a lighthearted long-distance run with people following behind. What followed behind him were Living Dead, where a single bite or even a scratch could cost him his life.
