Chapter 254: Ghost Marriage Tales (7)
The NPCs from the Yang family arrived quicker than expected.
Shen Yu, expressionless, pulled out. He first handed Ji Ning her underwear and pants, waited for her to put them on, then he only put on his underwear, and while pulling on his outer pants, he opened the door.
His blatant suggestive action left everyone standing outside dumbfounded.
"What were you doing inside?"
Ji Ning, following Shen Yu's instructions, sat on the brick bed with her back to the door, silent and unconcerned. She heard Shen Yu reply indifferently, "A man and a woman alone, what else could they be doing?"
At his words, an uproar erupted outside.
The man in the lead shouted, "I don't believe it! At a time like this, how could you two suddenly end up in bed together?"
Shen Yu replied, "We hit it off, is that a problem? She's my woman now."
Ji Ning was so embarrassed she closed her eyes, thinking thankfully that Teacher Shen had arrived just in time, otherwise she would have definitely been seized by these people to be forced into a ghost marriage with a dead man.
Perhaps because the shock Shen Yu gave the Yang family was too great, that group didn't press further and withdrew, looking puzzled.
But they were definitely going back to consult with Father Yang and Mother Yang about what to do. After all, with a grown man present, they couldn't very well tear off all pretenses of civility.
Once the people had left and quiet returned, Ji Ning turned to look at Shen Yu and asked, "Are they all gone?"
Shen Yu shook his head. "No, there are people watching from a distance."
Ji Ning stared at the floor tiles deep in thought. If ghostly mischief was truly behind this, whether or not she had lost her "virginity" would certainly not escape the ghost's eyes. So having sex with Shen Yu had been necessary.
She was now "not a virgin" and no longer met the conditions to be the bride. But if the Yang family gave up just like that, wouldn't it be a bit too simple?
While Ji Ning pondered the direction of the plot, in a spacious and dim cave dwelling on the upper slope, Father Yang and Mother Yang were kneeling before a coffin that had not been nailed shut.
Even though it was their son lying in the coffin, the two middle-aged people were still panicking, legs weak and trembling.
Earlier, after Mother Yang discovered that the two bizarrely deceased people shared the same cause of death, the couple hurried back to the mortuary to check, and were shocked to find that the corpse, dead for almost seven days, its flesh rotting and blackened, had silently opened its eyes.
Those eyes were turbid and lifeless, gray and sunken, yet one could see an undercurrent of fury within them.
Their son, who died unjustly at a young age, became a drowned ghost for no clear reason. He was dissatisfied with the marriage they were preparing for him, and his restless spirit refused to dissipate!
Their family was considered a prominent and influential household in Yangjiagou, and with only this one son, they could not bear to let him be wronged, no matter what.
So Father Yang and Mother Yang set their sights on the young female visitors from out of town, especially the relatives from the Du family. They had the villagers detain everyone and keep them under watch, forbidding them to run, and then they would select one by one for their deceased son.
At this moment, six lit candles were placed before the coffin, each resting on a piece of paper with a female guest's name written on it.
The doors and windows of the mortuary were tightly shut, yet a gloomy wind stirred within. The little paper strips beneath the candles rustled in the draft, but the flames on the candles remained utterly still, an eerie sight.
Father Yang and Mother Yang were trembling with fear, but this only strengthened their belief that their son's restless spirit lingered in the mortal world, wanting to settle his life's important affairs below.
It is said that the dead do not recognize the living. The couple feared angering their son's spirit, and coupled with the pride of a prominent family, they had already made up their minds on the matter.
After all, in a remote mountain area, far from the reach of the emperor, a few outsiders going "missing" would not be thoroughly investigated.
Just as they were plotting to mobilize the whole village to help with this, someone suddenly knocked on the door.
Mother Yang went to open the door. It was Yang Dazhi, the village head's youngest son, who had voluntarily offered to help the Yang family arrange another ghost marriage.
Yang Dazhi whispered into Mother Yang's ear, "That female guest surnamed Ji just went to bed with a man, so her body is no longer clean. Do you still want her?"
Mother Yang was furious, spat out a curse, and turned to look at the coffin.
Inside the room, a fierce wind immediately whipped up, sending paper money flying chaotically.
The candle with "Ji Ning" written beneath it swayed precariously, its flame flickering as if about to go out. But after a few breaths, the candle steadied itself again. The flame remained.
Mother Yang hastily turned to Yang Dazhi and said, "Want! Bring her here!"
